I CAN HEAR YOU

Journal Entry: Wed Mar 28, 2018, 11:03 PM

The place I've been hiding, is somewhere the hearing will never understand.
People can't see that you don't know what they're saying,
they can feel frustration when having to repeat, or being interrupted.
It's not their fault, they don't comprehend your frustration.
Soon, you start to avoid crowds, parties, families getting together.

My life was spent as a musician and how I did that is beyond me,
notes are so much sweeter now, my world is new and amazing.
Last month they put hearing aides in my ears and my eyes got huge.
It's too hard to write a poem about this feeling, it makes me cry with joy.
No one will ever know what it's like to live in a tunnel, unless they do.

Maybe if I say what I could hear for the first time, it'll clear it up:
the cat mew, birds, leaves , the wind, rain, purring, an entire speech, the minister,
things you don't want me to hear, lullabies on soft, whistling, strange car noises,
air conditioning, the heater kicking on, someone getting ice, chopping vegetables,
pain, tears, distress,etc., etc., etc. I wasn't rude, I didn't hear you.

livingwithhearingloss.com/2016…

It is hard to explain to others what it is like to have hearing loss —
the lack of clarity in speech, the sensitivity to loud noise,

and the exhaustion that comes with heavy bursts of communication.
It is an invisible disability so it is often misunderstood,
 downplayed or even ignored —

sometimes even by those closest to you.
But it can have a huge impact on your life, and the lives of those who love you.

I did not know that I was profoundly deaf,  I could hear enough to get by, and taught myself
to read lips. My family called me "The loud one".  I had the normal hearing tests, but an illness
that I have had things get progressively worse. In the recording studio, the headphones
helped me to hear. When the hearing aides were put on me, my whole life change.
I'm happy, please try to understand the hearing impaired. The arts saved me, never let them disappear from
the schools.

Here are the five things I wish everyone understood about hearing loss. Please add your thoughts in the comments.

1. Hearing loss is exhausting. When you have hearing loss, hearing takes work. This is hard for those with normal hearing to understand since hearing is so automatic for them. The best way I know to explain it is as a game board from Wheel of Fortune. Some of the letters are filled in, others are blank. The contestant (or listener in this case) is trying to make sense of the assorted and incomplete sounds he or she is hearing and turn these sounds into a word or phrase that makes sense in the context of the conversation. Not easy, especially since the conversation does not pause while you are doing this extra processing.
2. I am not stupid or rude. I might answer questions inappropriately or miss the point of a conversation now and then, but I am not stupid. I just misheard what you said. And if I don’t respond to your greeting or an “excuse me” at the store, it is not because I am ignoring you. I just didn’t hear it.
3. Hearing aids don’t work like glasses. Glasses transform blurry images into something crisp and clear restoring your vision to normal. With hearing aids, this is not the case. Hearing aids amplify sounds, but this only makes them louder, not necessarily crisper or clearer. Hearing aids also have a tough time differentiating among sounds so that background noises like the hum of the refrigerator or the air conditioner are amplified in addition to the more important sounds of conversation. This can actually make it harder to hear in certain situations!
4. I do not need you to speak for me. I am neither a child nor an invalid. If someone asks me a question and I don’t hear it, please repeat it so I can answer for myself. Doing otherwise is insulting and demeaning.
5. A few simple tricks can help a lot. Face me when you speak to me and keep your lips visible. Don’t try to talk to me from another room and be sure to get my attention first before speaking. I want to hear you and am trying my best. Following these rules will let me know that you are too.
Readers, what do you wish people knew about hearing loss?

The background flowers were from my son's wedding and done in oil pastels (they were yellow), I used a picture from Colorfly to paint her with a stylus. Transferred to photoshop 13, I added paints, blush, hair decorations and cut her out. She was added in Photoshop and transferred to Kvad Pro. Take a Chance

Journal Entry: Fri Feb 16, 2018, 11:05 AM

Take a Chance

There is a lesson to be found somewhere in this maze
of faceless members; a society too huge for comprehension.
People looking for what‘s lacking in the lives of everyday.

Vast expanses of ideas woven to entice the mind,
catapulted by each attitude, history, education, life.
Looking for common ground which may unite thoughts,
drawing lines in the sand which dare to join or separate.

Embracing or rejecting opinions which we find offensive.
This world, like a city, expanding, evolving, revamping;
allowing one to choose how to put their lives on screen,
real life becoming secondary, this environment so enticing.

More enjoyable than cleaning, meetings, mundane life;
deciding what will make us happy. Do we go deeper
into the labyrinth or search for something more tangible?
Taking a chance with something or someone new; inevitable?

NOW, GO READ A BOOK, SING A SONG, DANCE, WRITE, TAKE A PICTURE, MAKE THE COMPUTER DO MAGIC. JUST ALWAYS DANCE LIKE NOBODY'S WATCHING. IT SCARES ME WHEN THEY TRY TO TAKE THE ARTS OUT OF THE SCHOOLS; OUR CHILDREN WOULD BE LOST . I FEEL LUCKY, I REALIZED THAT I WAS GOING DEAF, BUT I GET TO HAVE HEARING AIDES. I'M SO LUCKY. MAY YOU ALWAYS BE BLESSED WITH THE ARTS. IF YOU ASK ME, THE WORLD WOULD HAVE A DARK SOUL SHOULD THEY EVER DISAPPEAR.
